The 2014 World Cup Jerseys: The Best

It is a tradition and part of the pre-World Cup build-up: the new jerseys. We all know Brazil’s jersey is yellow, Italy’s jersey is blue and the Netherlands will always wear orange. But within the limits set by their colors,  jerseys can change a lot. It’s in the details: removal or addition of small patterns, colors, a collar and/or a texture. Home-jerseys are somewhat sacred. The limitations are more strict. Away-jerseys, however, do not really have a set color that shouldn’t be tampered with. For an overview of the jersey’s, click here, or go to 26Kits.com.

Most of the 2014 World Cup jerseys have been revealed and it is time to take a look at the best, worst and most remarkable jerseys, starting with the best.

The Best

  • France-world-cup-2014-jerseyFrance: Les Bleus have always played in Imperial Blue. But since their switch from Adidas to Nike in 2011, the color of their jersey has become darker. This trend continues; for the 2014 World Cup they have an even darker jersey. The Gallic rooster, the symbol of the French football federation, is depicted without an escutcheon, making this is a very clean and simple design. The collar is larger and has changed its color from light blue to white, making is more explicit. In my opinion one of the best jerseys of the 2014 World Cup.

  • germanyGermany: White is the color of the German jersey, it always has been and always will be. They have added a feature that makes their jersey a bit less boring than their jerseys from the past decade. The jersey is decorated with a wide V on the chest in different shades of red. With a colored chest, Germany is going a little bit back in time. Their jerseys from 1990 and 1994 are the most popular jerseys Germany has ever had. If you ask me, this is one of the best German jerseys in years.

  • Netherlands 2014 World Cup Home Kit (5)The Netherlands: The Dutch football federation, the KNVB, is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. In honor of the occasion, the Dutch will wear a jersey that is soaked in history. A plain orange retro-style jersey without any nonsense, but with the lion. The lion is back in its entirety. Just like in the glory days (1974-1978). The lion disappeared after 1996. The new KNVB logo only showed the lion’s head.

  • Ghana-world-cup-jersey-2014Ghana: I always love it when the culture of a country is incorporated into a countries jersey. Take a look at Ghana’s. The collar is obviously the most striking feature of this jersey. It is inspired by Kente cloth, created by the Akan ethnic group in South Ghana. Puma have also made the good decision not to make the patterned portion too large. It’s just enough, it’s tasteful. Please do not confuse this pattern with the eyesores from the 90′s. That was crap, this is culture…

I like the French jersey best, followed by the Netherlands. I think Nike will provide the best jerseys overall anyway. What about Belgiums jersey?

The Belgium jersey is in my opinion not very special. I do like the crown watermark and the fact that they have kept the black bar at a reasonable size. It’s decent, but not beautiful. Don’t hate me :)
